2025 Pilot and Exploratory Studies Award
About the Program
The Advancing the Science of Palliative Care Research Across the Lifespan (ASCENT) Consortium invites applications for its 2025 Pilot and Exploratory Studies Award Program, designed to support innovative research that improves the lives of seriously ill patients and their caregivers. A major challenge in advancing palliative care is the lack of early-stage projects that build the evidence needed for real-world impact. This is especially true for early-career researchers seeking their first major grant and mid-career investigators exploring new directions. The ASCENT Pilot and Exploratory Studies Award offers funding, guidance, and support to help launch pilot and exploratory studies that can lead to larger, externally funded research.
Funding Opportunity Description
The ASCENT Pilot and Exploratory Studies Award is ideal for researchers seeking to build foundational evidence that can lead to larger, externally funded studies. Whether you're an early-career investigator transitioning from a K to an R award, or a mid-career researcher exploring new directions, the ASCENT Consortium provides the resources, mentorship, and community to help you succeed.
The ASCENT Consortium is seeking to fund a variety of pilot and exploratory studies. Each study that receives an award must not exceed a direct cost of $250,000 per year for a maximum duration of 2 years. For example, smaller pilot studies may have a direct cost of $100,000 and a duration of 1 year, while larger exploratory studies may have a direct cost of $250,000 per year and a duration of 2 years.
Please note the following budget guideline update for indirect costs: If applicable, applicants are required to use their federally negotiated rate agreement as stated in NIHGPS7.4: Reimbursement of Facilities and Administrative Costs. If your organization does not have a federally negotiated rate, you may use a de minimis rate of 10%.
We anticipate awarding 8-10 Pilot and Exploratory Studies grants; the number of awards granted will depend on the quality and budget of meritorious applications. Awards are not renewable.
Applications are open to investigators from all disciplines across varied institutions and geographic locations and can be focused on any patient population with serious illness. This includes populations with disproportionately higher palliative care needs and/or challenges accessing palliative care services as defined by NIH (see also NIH-Designated Populations with Health Disparities).
Note: Applicants cannot simultaneously apply for both an ASCENT Pilot and Exploratory Studies Award and Research Scholar Award in the same grant cycle.
